Bio

Black Flag, formed in 1976 in Hermosa Beach, California, is a renowned American punk rock band. Initially named Panic, the band was founded by Greg Ginn, their guitarist, songwriter and sole continuous member through many personnel changes over time. They have been highly lauded as one of the original hardcore punk bands and pioneers of post-hardcore. After disbanding in 1986, Black Flag reunited in 2003 and again in 2013.[3] The second reunion lasted for over a year and saw the release of their first studio album in nearly three decades, What The... (2013). In January 2019, the band announced their third reunion with Isaias Gil on drums and Joseph Noval on bass as replacements for Brandon Pertzborn and Tyler Smith respectively.[4]

Throughout the course of the 80s, Black Flag established a sound that was distinctly their own and simultaneously advanced the development of hardcore punk. Drawing from heavy metal melodies and rhythms, free jazz and classical elements, their discography displays a wide array of styles that contrasted with other punk rock bands of the time. As a result, they gained an extensive following not only through extensive touring in the US and Canada, but also by way of their promotion of DIY punk culture. As a major influence on punk culture, Black Flag has cemented their place as a foundational force in punk rock history.
