Bio

Jefferson Starship, an iconic American rock band from San Francisco, California, first formed in 1974 with several former members of Jefferson Airplane. Across the course of ten years, they released 8 albums and one gold-selling compilation, all achieving remarkable success. Their greatest triumph came with the 1975 album Red Octopus, certified double-platinum and reaching No.1 on the Billboard 200 chart. Over the years, the band experienced considerable changes both in personnel and genres while retaining their name. The group was initially formed by Jefferson Airplane veterans Paul Kantner and Grace Slick, joined by the likes of David Freiberg, Craig Chaquico, John Barbata, Pete Sears, and Papa John Creach. Marty Balin later became part of the band in 1975, who released the reliable top five hit Spitfire the following year. In 1978, both Balin and Slick left Jefferson Starship, after which the remaining members accepted Mickey Thomas as their replacement. 1981 marked the return of Slick, and with that the band continued to attain moderate success. Unfortunately, Kantner's departure in 1984 intangibly ended the era of Jefferson Starship, whilst leaving the rest of the band to establish Starship without him. Nevertheless, that didn't stop Kantner from forming his own version of the group, Jefferson Starship: The Next Generation, in 1992. This same lineup toured regularly up until his death in 2016 and remains active to this day. After a dispute regarding the use of the band's name in 2016, Craig Chaquico filed a lawsuit against them though it was eventually settled.
