Bio

John Edward Prine, who gained fame as an American singer-songwriter of country-folk music, was born and raised in Maywood, Illinois. By the age of 14 he had already learned to play the guitar, and went on to take part in classes at the Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago. After his time serving with the US Army in West Germany, Prine returned to Chicago where he worked as a mailman by day - writing and performing songs as a hobby at night. One review from critic Roger Ebert saw his career take off, and fellow singer-songwriter Kris Kristofferson took interest to invite Prine to be his opening act.

This led to Prine's first eponymous album with Atlantic Records in 1971, followed by three more albums. Asylum Records released Prine's next three before he co-founded Oh Boy Records and released most of his later works. Continually cited for influencing his generation, Prine's work was praised as "Proustian existentialism" by Nobel Laureate Bob Dylan, and earned him the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2020.
