Bio

Formed in 1978, English electronic band Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD) have been constantly pushing the boundaries of music. Pioneers of the synth-pop genre, they were one of the first acts to take part in the renowned Second British Invasion of the US. Out of OMD, co-founders Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphreys led their first group, The Id, until they ultimately decided to rework their track "Electricity" as the band's debut single. Despite receiving a degree of hostility from critics, OMD gained major success in Europe with the anti-war song "Enola Gay". The 1981 album Architecture & Morality established OMD as an influential force in the music industry, having released three hit singles in the process. However, their 1983 record Dazzle Ships was deemed too experimental and impacted their European sales negatively. In response, the band began to transition to a more radio-friendly sound for the 1984 LP Junk Culture. This change earned them greater attention in the US and spawned singles such as "If You Leave". After creative differences led to Humphreys and other members exiting the group in 1989, Andy McCluskey continued to lead OMD until their eventual break up in 1996. In 2006, they reformed with McCluskey and Humphreys taking the reins and exploring their experimental sounds. Selling over 40 million records worldwide, OMD have scored many chart successes, with eighteen top-40 UK Singles Chart entries and four top-40 Billboard Hot 100 hits. Having influenced countless artists across an array of genres, OMD remain an iconic and beloved electronic band.
