Bio

Formed in 1983, Red Hot Chili Peppers are an iconic American rock band made up of vocalist Anthony Kiedis, bassist Flea, drummer Chad Smith, and guitarist John Frusciante. The group melds elements of punk rock, funk, hip hop, hard rock, psychedelic rock, and alternative rock to create a uniquely eclectic sound which has since influenced numerous genres, selling over 120 million records worldwide and making them one of the most successful bands of all time.

In addition to rocking the charts, Red Hot Chili Peppers have won six Grammys, gained induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012, and will receive a Hollywood Walk of Fame star in 2022. Their achievements include fourteen Billboard number-ones, lasting 85 cumulative weeks at number one, and twenty-five top-ten songs on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart.

The original lineup of the band featured Kiedis, Flea, guitarist Hillel Slovak, and drummer Jack Irons, though commitments to other projects meant Slovak and Irons did not play on their self-titled debut in 1984. In 1988, Slovak sadly passed away from a drug overdose, leaving behind Irons who left shortly after. This was followed by Jack Sherman and Cliff Martinez stepping in and the release of Freaky Styley (1985) and The Uplift Mofo Party Plan (1987). Guitarist Dave Navarro then joined the crew for their sixth album One Hot Minute (1995). Eventually, due to personal issues, Navarro and Frusciante left the band, leaving Kiedis and Flea as the only two remaining original members.

Frusciante returned to the group in 1998, with their seventh album Californication (1999) becoming their greatest commercial success, selling 16 million copies worldwide. By the Way (2002) and Stadium Arcadium (2006) were similarly successful, with the latter reaching number one on the Billboard 200 chart. Josh Klinghoffer replaced Frusciante during his second leave in 2009 and appeared on I'm with You (2011) and The Getaway (2016), until Frusciante rejoined in 2019. The group is set to release their twelfth and thirteenth albums Unlimited Love and Return of the Dream Canteen in 2022.
