Bio

Village People is a renowned American disco group known for their flamboyant costumes and salacious lyrics in their music. Founded by French producers Jacques Morali, Henri Belolo, and lead vocalist Victor Willis, the group took its name from the famed Greenwich Village in Manhattan, a hub of gay culture. Each member embodied a form of idealized masculinity and was cast as a macho gay-fantasy persona.[4] To this day, Willis remains the sole original member. The band gained immense popularity and achieved several disco and dance hits worldwide, including the smash singles “Macho Man”, “In the Navy”, “Go West”, and their best-known creation “Y.M.C.A.”. In 2020, the song was honored by the Library of Congress and included in the National Recording Registry due to its cultural, historical, and artistic significance.[7]
