Northwest Battle Buddies is a nonprofit dedicated to empowering veterans with PTSD by providing them with professionally trained service dogs at no cost. Founded in 2012 in Battle Ground, Washington, the program pairs eligible veterans—those who have deployed, been honorably discharged (or are active duty with command approval), and have a PTSD diagnosis—with carefully matched service dogs. Once paired, veterans complete an intensive five-week training program to build communication, trust, and handling skills, followed by graduation and official certification. The organization offers lifetime support, including annual recertification and ongoing training, ensuring each veteran-dog team continues to thrive. With service dogs typically working for 8–10 years before retirement, Northwest Battle Buddies remains committed to standing by veterans long-term, helping them regain independence, reduce isolation, and rebuild confidence in everyday life.
